An intricately hand-painted nature scene replete with birds, butterflies, branches, and flowers adorns a cream band at the top of this presumed chocolate pot made by Haviland & Co., a manufacturer of Limoges porcelain in France, begun in the 1840s by the American Haviland family, importers of porcelain to the US. Its finest period is generally accepted to be the late 19th century, when it tracked wider artistic styles in innovative designs in porcelain, as well as stoneware and sometimes other ceramics.This pot is beautiful white porcelain made from French kaolin that the Haviland companies were known for. Made by the china company of Charles Field Haviland, nephew to David Haviland. When Charles Haviland retired, the company was partnered with Gerard, Dufraisseix and Morel. The mark on the bottom of the piece has both the CFH initials as well as the GDM initials, a mark used after 1881.Missing the lid. Would make a lovely vase for a bouquet of flowers or pitcher for cold beverages.
