An antique Ottoman Empire tinned copper lidded serving plate set / food cover. Hand forged in the late 18th century / early 19th century, the lid styled after the Ottoman Turkish turban helmet, featuring a pointed finial topped bulbous shaped fluted dome that covers a circular footed base serving dish. Both pieces are signed, with an Arabic signature to the border. The copper is showing through the elegantly patinated silver, creating a uniquely stunning, rich, warm metalic appearance.
Highly decorative and functional, it can still be used for both hot or cold food since it still has proper layer of tin. Such plates were used for main courses, with the cover removed when the eating starts.
