Home Tableware & Barware | 1950s English Royal Crest King's Arms Brass Trivet Made in Williamsburg, Virginia FT48844

A vintage reproduction artifact based on the coat of arms which appears on the sign identifying the famous King's Arms Tavern in Williamsburg, Virginia. The arms which have been modeled in such fine detail are those of Great Britian from the accession of George I in 1714 until 1801 and hence were the royal arms of George I, II and III.

The shield is quartered and represents at upper left, England and Scotland; at upper right, France; at lower left, Ireland; and at lower right, the Kingdom of Hanover. The crest consists of the crown of England, surmounted by a lion statant guardant crowned. The supporters are the crowned lion for England and collared and chained unicorn for Scotland. The shieled is surrounded by the badge of the Order of the Garter, bearing the old French motto, "Honi soit qui mal y pense". (Evil to him who evil thinks).

At the bottom of the arms is a motto on a band decorated with a rose (the badge of England) and a thistle (the badge of Scotland), "Dieu et mon Droit" (God and my right"). This statement is said to have been uttered in 1340 by Edward III when he began the Hundred Years' War to obtain the crown of France, which he believed rightfully belonged to him by inheritance.

This piece is in outstanding condition with very little patina. It is heavy for its size.
