Home Decor | Sprites with Amphorae' by Edward McCartan (1879-1947 USA) Bronze Sculptures Circa 1920s - a Pair TX01799

Entirely charming and whimsical, this Classic -- and rare -- pair of bronze candlesticks depict male and female sprites, each standing on a gilded sphere and carrying an Amphora. Their torsos are arched and their heads twisted to one side, as if they are dancing, or perhaps alighting on a bit of hard earth below. These two pieces, especially with lovely green-black patinas, gilded details and marble bases, are very difficult to find. The sculptor, Edward McCartan, is known for his masterful figural sculptures, most notably a life-sized, gilded sculpture of Dionysus with a lion cub that is prominently displayed at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina.
