Stunning antique circa 1900 beer stein by Mettlach, marked number 2628. Made in Germany. The piece is made in the jasperware tradition of Wedgwood with large raised cameo scenes circling the body. The main scene is of men playing lawn bowling, which carries through to the lid finial which is a bowling ball, and the lid hinge pin which is a bowling pin! Two other cameo scenes complete the story showing more men in conversation, as well as a man serving tall mugs of beer. The scenes are framed with a grape arbor relief. Lid bracket is pewter metal. Stein size is 1/2 liter, and it is in excellent condition, without any cracks or chips. We note a few very small transparent spots on the lid top which we suppose might be adhesive from under the pewter rim, not detracting.
